The “Great Resignation” has not slowed down since its inception in 2021. As BBC Worklife explains, as of August 2022, employees continue to quit their jobs en masse. This sudden spike in employee turnover has created a plethora of recruitment challenges for businesses in 2022, Forbes notes. Consequently, employers have had to adjust their hiring techniques in response. Below are some trends that have been noticed so far:
1) Hiring interim executives
Many companies have turned to using interim executives, experienced leaders hired on a short-term basis – typically between 3 and 18 months. Most organizations hire a temporary director or head of department when they’re going through a major transition or restructuring period. As the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, temporary executive recruitment increased between 3 and 20% in 2021.
2) Skills based hiring
A rising number of organizations are focusing on a job candidate’s skills rather than their work history during the recruitment process. The Society for Human Resource Management also observed that over 70 million employees are extremely skilled in their relevant fields but do not possess a college degree or certification. As Treasury and Risk explains, fewer companies are requiring formal education or extensive working experience and are testing applicants’ abilities instead, allowing them to select workers from previously unrecognized pools of job-seekers.
3) Remote work and recruitment
Many people are looking for jobs that allow them to work from home either full-time or a few days a week. Glassdoor reports that almost 9 out of 10 survey respondents want the choice to work remotely. The same is true for employers too, as increasing numbers of organizations’ recruitment departments are using online software to interview potential candidates. Jobvite found that approximately 40% of employees hired over the past year completed at least part of the screening process via video call platforms such as Zoom.
4) Company evaluations
A growing number of job-seekers are researching companies before applying for jobs. A 2021 study by CareerArc discovered that nearly 90% of would-be employees evaluate brands before completing an application. Beyond current and former employee reviews, the vast majority of aspiring employees (more than three-quarters of them, according to Glassdoor) want to see that a business is dedicated to diversity, equity and inclusion. The quality of the interview process is as important as a company’s ethics. Just under half of the respondents in a survey conducted by PwC said they declined a job offer when the recruitment experience was poor.
5) Social media listings
While many job-seekers still use online job vacancy websites to find employment opportunities, a greater number of people are using social media to research job listings. Jobvite learned that close to 40% of surveyed job applicants utilize platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn.
